Design Clinic | Are Your Sapphire Window Specifications Too Tight?

When designing a custom sapphire window, tighter tolerances don't always mean better performance.

Over-specifying certain parameters can increase manufacturing costs, extend lead times, and make production more challenging.

Here are a few key points to consider:

  • Dimensions & Tolerances – Are tight tolerances necessary for every dimension?
  • Flatness & Parallelism – What does your optical system actually require?
  • Surface Quality – Is 60/40 sufficient, or does the application really need 20/10?
  • Edge & Chamfer – Proper edge design helps reduce chipping during handling and assembly.
  • Coating Requirements – Wavelength range, reflectance, and angle of incidence should match the actual application.

Good optical design is about finding the right balance between performance, manufacturability, and cost.

At Co-Energy Optics, we manufacture custom sapphire windows, tubes, and other precision optical components.

If you're developing a new sapphire component, feel free to share your drawing with us. We can review the specifications and suggest practical manufacturing options.
